Project Introduction

The Virtual CIO & Multi-Agent Family Office Intelligence Platform is a next-generation AI-powered intelligence system designed specifically for Thornapple River Capital (TRC) to modernize how family office information is accessed, governed, and operationalized. Built as a secure, enterprise-grade multi-agent platform, the system enables family principals and executives to interact with portfolio data, investment documents, relationship intelligence, and market context through natural language — while preserving strict household isolation, auditability, and institutional governance.
Today, many critical information requests within TRC are routed manually through leadership via phone calls, emails, or text messages. This operational model creates significant bottlenecks, including delayed decision-making, over-dependence on a small number of key individuals, fragmented institutional knowledge, and limited scalability across family office operations. The Virtual CIO platform addresses these constraints by introducing a centralized intelligence layer capable of retrieving, synthesizing, and governing information across multiple enterprise systems in real time.
The project is being delivered as Phase 1 — Proof of Concept (POC) and focuses on establishing the foundational architecture for a scalable AI-native family office operating platform. The Phase 1 implementation introduces a read-only, supervised multi-agent environment capable of answering complex portfolio and document-related questions with source citations, confidence scoring, and full audit tracking. The system is designed not as a conventional chatbot, but as a governed orchestration framework composed of specialized AI agents with clearly bounded responsibilities and enterprise-grade security controls.
At the core of the platform are three strategic technology layers:
- Miriel.ai serves as the secure Data & Knowledge Layer responsible for document ingestion, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic indexing, vector storage, and automated PII redaction.
- OpenClaw.ai functions as the enterprise orchestration engine coordinating agent workflows, enforcing household permissions, maintaining session state, and governing escalation logic.
- OpenRouter.ai provides model-agnostic enterprise LLM routing, allowing the system to dynamically switch between hosted AI models with provider failover and cost optimization capabilities.
The Virtual CIO platform integrates with TRC’s core operational systems, including:
- Addepar for portfolio and financial data
- Affinity for CRM and investment relationship intelligence
- Dropbox for document management and retrieval
- OpenWebUI for authenticated user interaction and reporting interfaces
Through these integrations, the system enables users to ask sophisticated questions such as:
- Portfolio cash availability and allocation exposure
- Investment performance analysis
- Capital call forecasting
- Semantic search across legal and investment documents
- Market and regulatory context surrounding portfolio companies
- Relationship and investment activity insights
A defining characteristic of the platform is its emphasis on governance, security, and explainability. Every response generated by the system includes:
- Source citations
- Data freshness indicators
- Confidence scoring
- Immutable audit logs
- Household-scoped access controls
- Automated escalation for low-confidence responses
The architecture has been intentionally designed to eliminate vendor lock-in and support future expansion across multiple phases. Each system layer is independently swappable, enabling TRC to evolve infrastructure, models, orchestration frameworks, or retrieval systems without requiring platform rewrites. This modular strategy ensures long-term adaptability as the AI ecosystem continues to evolve.
Phase 1 specifically focuses on validating the operational feasibility of a production-grade Virtual CIO through the deployment of five specialized agents:
- Supervisor Agent
- Portfolio Analyst Agent
- Investment Intelligence Agent
- Document Retrieval Agent
- Market Context Agent
Together, these agents create a coordinated intelligence ecosystem capable of synthesizing structured and unstructured data into actionable insights while maintaining enterprise-grade compliance and operational transparency.
The broader strategic objective of the project is to transform TRC from a manually coordinated information model into an AI-enabled family office intelligence platform that scales institutional knowledge, accelerates investment decision-making, improves responsiveness to family principals, and establishes the technological foundation for future autonomous workflows and advanced operational automation.
